INTRODUCTION
With ever-increasing industrial and civil advancement, the ambient air quality is in danger of deteriorating. This is more accentuated in metros and other big cities, where apart from large housing projects being implemented, the number of automobiles and other equipment and devices, which contribute to ambient air pollution, has also risen exponentially. Various pollution control boards, including Central Pollution Control Board and the state boards have taken cognizance of the potential hazards to public health due to air pollution. One of the measures taken is the mandate for regular monitoring of the ambient air for Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) and Respirable Particulate Matter (RSPM). Polltech Instruments's High Volume Samplers for SPM and RSPM is a series of high volume samplers, which can be configured by mixing and matching the various options, to evolve efficient and cost-effective systems for meeting a very wide range of sampling requirements from very simple manual sampling systems to highly sophisticated automatic systems. These samplers can also be adapted for gaseous sampling.
CONSTRUCTION
A high volume sampler basically consists of a cabinet, a sampling inlet, a suction blower, a filter holder and an electronic control module etc.. In most models, the cabinet houses all the components, except the sampling inlet, which is placed on top of the cabinet. In some models, the blower is packaged as a separate module and is placed outside the cabinet.
The blower creates the required suction for drawing the sampled air through the sampling inlet and the filter paper. The blower speed determines the airflow rate. The particulates present in the sampled air are entrapped by the filter paper. The sampling inlet is available in two types viz. Gable Roof for SPM & Size Selective Inlet (SSI) for RSPM. Since Gable Roof and SSI are totally interchangeable, all models of RSPM samplers can also be used for SPM sampling.
Gaseous Sampling is carried out by utilizing a train of 4Nos. 35 ml glass impingers in a double walled cold box. The gaseous pollutants are collected in appropriate adsorbers placed in the impingers. A 4 way valve manifold and a rotameters is also provided for independently setting the airflow rate through each impinger.
