INTRODUCTION
It is a well-known fact that a number of substances like dust, lint, vapours and gases, which are used or get generated in the industry, present varying degrees of health hazard, which depends upon the chemical composition and the method of ingestion among other factors. Volatile hydrocarbons are some of the chemicals, which are most commonly employed in a number of industries and work places. Many other substances including toxic gases and vapours are present in the industry. Since any industry is prone to leakages, spills and mishandling, these hazardous pollutants can enter the air and therefrom into the human body through the process of inhalation. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the work places for the presence of various pollutants to prevent the personnel working in these areas from getting affected. Very often, it is also desirable to monitor the ambient air surrounding such industries to evaluate the potential hazard to the inhabitants of surrounding areas.
The sampling technique involves the passing of sampled air through a sampling tube containing an adsorbent, which adsorbs the gases or vapours from the sampled air. The adsorbent is subsequently processed in a laboratory and the analysis is carried out by gas chromatography techniques.
Model PEM-PS1 Personal Air Sampler is a small, battery-operated, compact and lightweight sampler, which is easily carried by a person. This sampler nearly monitors the air actually inhaled by the person while working in the work area. The sampling rate can be adjusted from 0.25 LPM to 3.0 LPM with +/- 5% accuracy. The 6V battery pack has a capacity to enable sampling for 8 hours.
Model PEM-LVAS 1 and Model PEM-LVAS 2 are battery powered low volume air samplers, which sample the air in the work areas or the ambient air in the surrounding areas. Mains operation is possible through the use of AC adaptors.
Each sampler can be adapted for any of the three sampling rate ranges 5-100cc/mt, 50-500cc/mt and 0.3 to 3.0LPM. This is achieved by utilizing a corresponding range rotameters. Model PEM-LVAS 1 and Model PEM-LVAS 2 are similar except that PEM-LVAS 2 is provided with an electronic time / time totalizer making it capable for automatic start and stop operation.
CONSTRUCTION
Model PEM-PS1 Personal Air Sampler comprises a small diaphragm type pump, power control switch, a rotameter, the flow control valve and the associated tubing and fittings. All these components are housed in a corrosion resistant poly-carbonate casing.
Model PEM-LVAS 1 and Model PEM-LVAS 2 are similar in construction. Each model comprises a sampling pump, a rotameter, a flow control valve, a sampling cell and the required pneumatic and electrical hardware. All the components are housed in an elegant and sturdy metallic housing.
In addition to the above, Model PEM-LVAS 2 also includes an electronic timer and the associated timing control, indication and display hardware. The delay time is settable from 0to 99 minutes, sampling time is settable from 0 to 999 minutes. The display is 3 digit 7 segment LCD module.
All the above samplers have the facility for interconnecting different types of sampling tubes.
