Application
Radon, Thoron and their daughter products are present in varying quantities in our environment. Being largely alpha-emitters, they constitute a health hazard if present in quantities beyond permissible limits. Therefore, there is a constant need for detection and measurement of these radioactive substances. It is particularly important to monitor uranium and thorium mines and surrounding areas and other large housing complexes. Further, the techniques employed for this purpose must be amenable for field deployment and must give reproducible measurements. Spark counting is a technique, which adequately meets these criteria. In this technique, tracks are created by the passage of the alphas in Solid State Nuclear Track Detectors (SSNTD), which are then counted by a spark counter.
Spark counter method of track counting is a much more efficient method compared with the alternative technique of counting through an optical microscope.
Model PSI-SC 1 Spark Counter is microprocessor-based instrument, which being compact and lightweight is useful for in-field operation and gives fast, accurate and reliable measurements.
Construction
Model PSI-SC 1 Spark Counter consists of a spark head and an electronic unit. The spark head holds the Solid State Nuclear Track Detectors (SSNTD) and the mechanism for generation and counting of sparks. The electronic unit comprises the High Voltage Supplies and a microprocessor based control and display system.. The pre-sparking and counting voltage are adjustable from 100V to 1000V DC through digital potentiometers. The spark counting time called the Gate Window time is adjustable from 1 to 10 Secs. Data from the spark counter can be transferred to a PC through the in-built RS-232 serial communication port.
